Vídeo monocanal (9') y piezas de impresión 3D
De 1925 a 1970, Roma y Buenos Aires estuvieron unidas por un cable submarino que permitía la
comunicación telegráfica transatlántica. Esta infraestructura sigue siendo visible a su paso por Las
Palmas de Gran Canaria (Islas Canarias) cuando la marea llega a niveles muy bajos. Como tantos otros
cables que han facilitado nuestras comunicaciones, yacen en el fondo del mar, formando una red casi
escultórica de ruinas submarinas a través de las cuales interrogarse sobre los cambios tecnológicos.
Casi cien años después de su instalación, la pieza intenta seguir los vestigios de estos antiguos
cables transatlánticos bajo el agua, por donde avanzan las imágenes grabadas en diferentes momentos
y días, haciendo una alusión a los datos, transmitidos en forma de paquetes, un día tras otro,
alrededor del mundo. A modo de díptico, las piezas en 3D provienen de modelos de distintos
telégrafos, pero son partes que están presentes y sostienen físicamente muchos otros mecanismos y
dispositivos. Estos elementos han sido impresos con un polímero similar al utilizado en el
aislamiento de cables submarinos.
Single-channel video (9') and 3D printed pieces
From 1925 to 1970, Rome and Buenos Aires were linked by a submarine cable that allowed transatlantic
telegraphic communication. This infrastructure is still visible as it passes through Las Palmas de
Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) when the tide reaches very low levels. Like so many other cables that
have enabled our communications, they lie at the bottom of the sea, forming an almost sculptural
network of underwater ruins through which we may address technological changes. Almost a hundred
years after its installation, the video attempts to follow the vestiges of these old transatlantic
cables under the water, where the images filmed at different times and days advance, pointing to the
data, which is transmitted in the form of packets, one day after another, around the world. As a
diptych, the 3D pieces come from models of different telegraphs, but they are parts that are present
and physically support many other mechanisms and devices. These elements have been printed with a
polymer similar to that used in the insulation of submarine cables.
